A Chemoemitter System Mimicking Chemical Communication in Insects

چکیده
The authors imparted the main concept of infochemical communication and its realization in the first micromachinebased chemoemitter. We present herein details on the microfabrication and functionality of its elements, particularly the biomicroreactor and the evaporator. The functionality of the integrated chemoemitter has been evidenced in an electrophysiological assay using antennae of male Spodoptera littoralis.

Mimicking Insect Communication: Release and Detection of Pheromone, Biosynthesized by an Alcohol Acetyl Transferase Immobilized in a Microreactor
Infochemical production, release and detection of (Z,E)-9,11-tetradecadienyl acetate, the major component of the pheromone of the moth Spodoptera littoralis, is achieved in a novel microfluidic system designed to mimic the final step of the pheromone biosynthesis by immobilized recombinant alcohol acetyl transferase. The microfluidic system is part of an "artificial gland", i.e., a chemoemitter...

متن کاملFirst Order Processing of Complex Olfactory Information in the Moth Brain
As part of a project to develop a novel class of technology for infochemical communication, we investigated olfactory processing in the insect brain to form the basis for a multicomponent detector system able to recover ratiometric odor information deployed in the world. By unraveling neuronal network processing, we support the generation of a tuned detector capable of deciphering chemical sign...
متن کاملExocrine Glands and Their Key Function in the Communication System of Social Insects
Communication in social insects to a very considerable extent is mediated by the action of chemical messenger molecules or pheromones. These are produced in an impressive variety of exocrine glands, that occur all over the body of these insects. Various gland types as well as various types of pheromonal communication can be distinguished. This article gives an example of each of the 5 anatomica...
